The Science of Worker Protection

What Is Industrial Hygiene?

Industrial hygiene is the science and practice of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace environmental factors that may cause illness, impaired health, or significant discomfort among workers. These hazards include chemical exposures such as airborne dusts, fumes, and vapors; physical agents like noise and heat stress; biological hazards including mold and bacteria; and ergonomic risk factors that lead to musculoskeletal disorders.

Unlike safety hazards that cause immediate injuries, occupational health hazards often develop over weeks, months, or years of exposure. Workers may not realize they are being harmed until irreversible damage has occurred. That is why proactive industrial hygiene monitoring and assessment is essential. OSHA requires employers to evaluate workplace exposures under the General Duty Clause and numerous substance-specific standards, including regulations for silica, lead, asbestos, noise, and hundreds of other chemicals.

OccuPros provides end-to-end industrial hygiene services that go beyond simple sampling. We assess your operations, identify exposure risks, conduct quantitative monitoring using calibrated instruments and accredited laboratories, and deliver comprehensive reports with clear, prioritized recommendations your team can act on immediately.

Comprehensive Capabilities

Our Industrial Hygiene Services

From initial hazard assessments to ongoing monitoring programs, OccuPros delivers the full spectrum of industrial hygiene services your operation needs to stay compliant and protect your people.

Noise Monitoring & Audiometric Testing

Personal dosimetry and area noise surveys per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95. We identify overexposed workers, map noise zones, and design hearing conservation programs that prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

Air Quality & Exposure Monitoring

Personal breathing zone and area air sampling for dusts, fumes, vapors, gases, and mists. Results are compared against OSHA PELs, ACGIH TLVs, and NIOSH RELs to determine compliance status and exposure risk.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Assessments

Comprehensive evaluations of temperature, humidity, CO2, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and ventilation effectiveness. We investigate employee complaints and identify building-related illness sources.

Asbestos Surveys & Management

Building inspections, bulk sampling, and asbestos management plans per EPA NESHAP and OSHA 1926.1101. We identify asbestos-containing materials, assess condition, and develop operations and maintenance programs.

Lead Assessments & Compliance

Lead-based paint inspections, risk assessments, personal air monitoring, and blood lead level program coordination per OSHA 1926.62 and 1910.1025. We help you meet the action level and PEL requirements.

Mold Assessment & Remediation Oversight

Surface and air sampling for mold contamination, moisture source identification, and third-party oversight of remediation activities. We provide clearance testing to confirm the space is safe for reoccupancy.

Silica Exposure Monitoring

Respirable crystalline silica sampling per OSHA’s Table 1 and 29 CFR 1926.1153. We determine if your operations exceed the 50 ug/m3 PEL, evaluate engineering controls, and support your written exposure control plan.

Chemical Exposure Assessments

Qualitative and quantitative assessments for solvents, metals, acids, welding fumes, isocyanates, and other chemical agents. We review SDSs, evaluate exposure pathways, and recommend hierarchy-of-controls solutions. Learn more in our safety data sheets guide.

Respirator Fit Testing

Quantitative and qualitative respirator fit testing per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. We test N95s, half-face, full-face, and powered air-purifying respirators to ensure each worker achieves a proper seal and adequate protection.

Hearing Conservation Programs

Complete hearing conservation program development including baseline and annual audiograms, noise monitoring, HPD selection and training, recordkeeping, and standard threshold shift analysis per OSHA requirements. Learn more in our OSHA recordkeeping guide.

Medical Surveillance Program Design

We design medical surveillance programs required by OSHA substance-specific standards for lead, asbestos, benzene, silica, and other regulated substances. Includes physician coordination, exam scheduling, and recordkeeping systems.

Heat Stress Monitoring

Wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) monitoring, work-rest cycle determination, and heat illness prevention program development. We help you comply with OSHA’s heat emphasis program and emerging heat standards.

Ergonomic Assessments

Job hazard analyses for musculoskeletal risk factors including repetitive motion, awkward postures, forceful exertions, and contact stress. We provide practical engineering and administrative control recommendations. Learn more about our ergonomic assessment services.

Hazardous Materials Surveys

Pre-renovation and pre-demolition surveys for asbestos, lead-based paint, PCBs, mercury, and other hazardous materials. We provide documented reports that satisfy regulatory requirements and protect your contractors.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When does my company need industrial hygiene monitoring?

You need industrial hygiene monitoring whenever workers may be exposed to chemical, physical, or biological hazards above safe levels. Common triggers include employee complaints about air quality, visible dust or fumes in the work area, use of chemicals without engineering controls, noise levels requiring raised voices to communicate, and OSHA substance-specific standards that mandate initial and periodic exposure assessments. If you are unsure, a qualitative hazard assessment is a cost-effective first step.

How long does an industrial hygiene assessment take?

The on-site portion typically takes one to three days depending on the size of your facility and the number of agents being monitored. Personal exposure samples are collected over a full work shift (typically 8 hours) to capture time-weighted average exposures. Laboratory analysis adds 5 to 10 business days for standard turnaround. Rush analysis is available when you need results faster. You will receive a comprehensive written report within two to three weeks of sampling.

What is the difference between industrial hygiene and safety?

Safety focuses on preventing acute injuries from physical hazards like falls, struck-by incidents, and machinery. Industrial hygiene focuses on preventing occupational illnesses caused by chronic exposure to chemical, physical, and biological agents. While a safety professional might address a fall hazard that could injure a worker today, an industrial hygienist addresses a silica exposure that could cause silicosis over months or years. Both disciplines are essential, and OccuPros provides expertise in both areas.

Do you provide industrial hygiene services outside of Texas?

Yes. While OccuPros is headquartered in Arlington, Texas, we provide industrial hygiene services nationwide. We regularly deploy teams to client facilities across the United States for exposure monitoring, air quality assessments, asbestos and lead surveys, and comprehensive IH program development. Our consistent methodology and reporting standards ensure the same quality regardless of location.

How much do industrial hygiene services cost?

Pricing depends on the scope of work, number of samples, types of analyses required, and location. A basic noise survey for a single department may start at a few hundred dollars, while a comprehensive multi-agent exposure assessment for a large facility will cost more. We provide detailed proposals with transparent pricing before any work begins so there are no surprises. Contact us for a consultation and custom quote.
