Lockout/Tagout (Control of Hazardous Energy)

A machine that is off is not always safe. The energy still inside it has killed more workers than most people imagine. This course is about taking that energy to zero.

A worker reaches into a jammed machine to clear it. It is switched off, so it feels safe. But a spring is still loaded, or a capacitor still holds a charge, or someone across the plant hits start. In an instant, the machine that was “off” takes a hand, an arm, or a life. These are some of the most preventable serious injuries in industry, and they happen during the most ordinary task: fixing or clearing a machine.

Lockout/tagout is how we make sure hazardous energy is truly controlled before anyone reaches into the danger zone. Done right, it is simple, reliable, and final. This course teaches you the energy that hides inside equipment, the roles, and the exact steps that take a machine from running to genuinely safe and back again.

What you will learn

  • Recognize the many forms of hazardous energy, including the stored energy people forget.
  • Know the difference between an authorized and an affected employee, and who applies locks.
  • Apply the six steps of lockout/tagout, from preparation to verifying zero energy.
  • Understand why a lock is the control and a tag is only a warning.
  • Handle group lockout, shift changes, and the one rule you never break: never remove another person’s lock.

Who this is for

Maintenance and operationsAnyone who services, repairs, clears, or sets up machines, or works near someone who does.
Supervisors and leadsAnyone who plans servicing work or is responsible for the people in the danger zone.
Important: This is awareness and theory training. It builds the knowledge behind lockout/tagout, but it is not authorization to lock out equipment and not a substitute for becoming an authorized employee. That requires hands-on training on the specific machines and procedures at your site, and your employer’s written energy control program.

Aligned with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 (The Control of Hazardous Energy), 1910.333 (electrical), and related construction requirements. Online theory completion only. OccuPros | (469) 746-4040 | occupros.com | Every Worker Home Safe.

Before you buy

The practical questions, answered plainly.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. When you finish the course and pass the assessment, your certificate of completion is available to download immediately from your dashboard. It carries a verification number.

How long do I have access?

Access to this course does not expire. It is self-paced, so you can start, stop and resume whenever you like, and your progress is saved between sessions.

What if I fail the assessment?

You can retake it. Knowledge checks run through the course and the final assessment draws from a larger question bank, so a retake will not simply repeat the same questions.

Does this replace hands-on training?

This course delivers the knowledge portion. Site-specific procedures, equipment-specific practice and any required practical evaluation remain your employer's responsibility, and the course is explicit about where those lines fall.

How often does this training need repeating?

The recommended refresher cadence for this topic is 1 year. Retraining is also triggered by a change in process or equipment, or by an observed gap in an employee's knowledge.

Can I buy this for my whole crew?

Yes. Choose "My team" on this page to buy seats instead of a single enrolment. You become the team administrator, assign seats from your Team Portal as people join, and volume pricing applies automatically at 5 seats and again at 10.
