Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Awareness
Hydrogen sulfide is a gas that can drop a strong, healthy worker in a single breath, and it does its worst work in exactly the places people stop paying attention. This course teaches you to respect it, detect it, and get away from it before it can hurt you.
Hydrogen sulfide, often called H2S or sour gas, does not look like a hazard and it will not stay one you can sense. It is colorless, so you never see it coming. At low levels it smells like rotten eggs, which fools people into thinking they will always smell it first. The truth is the opposite: H2S deadens your sense of smell within minutes, and at the concentrations that kill, you smell nothing at all. By the time a worker realizes something is wrong, the gas may already have taken away the very warning he was counting on.
This gas is common in oil and gas, drilling, wastewater and sewers, tanks, pits, and anywhere organic matter is breaking down. It is heavier than air, so it pools in low spots and confined spaces and waits. And it is fast. At a few hundred parts per million it causes near-instant collapse, called knockdown, and at the highest levels a single breath can be fatal. The encouraging news is that H2S is also one of the most manageable hazards on any site once you understand it. With gas monitors, ventilation, wind awareness, supplied-air respirators, the buddy system, and proper rescue, workers handle it safely every single day. This course gives you that understanding.
