Lead Awareness
Lead does not warn you. It has no smell, no taste, and the dust is often too fine to see. By the time you feel it, the damage is already done, and some of it does not come back. This course teaches you to recognize lead, understand how it gets into you, and stop it from following you home to your family.
Lead is one of the oldest hazards in the building trades, and one of the quietest. It does not flash, spark, or fall. It sits in old paint, in solder, in the dust kicked up when you grind, cut, sand, or blast on coated steel, and it waits. A worker can do everything else right, wear the hard hat, clip the harness, lock out the machine, and still walk off the job carrying an invisible poison on their hands, their clothes, and their boots. That is what makes lead different. The thing that hurts you is the thing you cannot see.
And here is the part that turns lead from a workplace problem into a family problem. Lead does not stay at work. It rides home on contaminated clothing, in a work truck, on skin that did not get washed, and it ends up on the couch, in the car seat, on the floor where a child plays. Children absorb lead far more readily than adults, and even small amounts can harm a developing brain in ways that last a lifetime. This is why lead awareness is not just about protecting yourself. It is about the people waiting for you at home, and making sure the only thing you bring them at the end of the day is you.
What you will learn
- What lead is, where it is found on the job (pre-1978 paint, solder, batteries, scrap and demolition, welding and cutting and abrasive blasting on coated steel, firing ranges), and why those tasks are the high-risk ones.
- The two routes that get lead into your body: breathing in fume and dust, and swallowing it through hand-to-mouth contact, and how to shut both routes down.
- What lead does to the body (the nervous system, the kidneys, reproduction, and the blood), why there is no safe level, and why children are especially vulnerable.
- What OSHA 29 CFR 1926.62 and 1910.1025 set as the permissible exposure limit (50 micrograms per cubic meter as an 8-hour TWA) and the action level (30 micrograms per cubic meter), and what a real lead compliance program includes.
- How to stop take-home contamination cold: change clothes, shower, never eat, drink, or smoke in work areas, use the hygiene controls, and recognize and report lead the moment you suspect it.
