Asbestos Awareness
You cannot smell it, see it in the air, or feel it when you breathe it in. Asbestos is still hiding in older buildings all around us, and the only real protection is knowing what it is, where it lives, and why you never disturb it. This course teaches you to recognize it and leave it alone.
Asbestos does not look dangerous. It is gray, white, or brown fiber baked into old floor tile, wrapped around a steam pipe, pressed into ceiling texture, sitting in a roof or a brake or a gasket, quiet and harmless looking. For most of the last century we put it in thousands of building products because it was cheap, strong, and fireproof, and it is still in millions of older buildings today. Left alone and undamaged, it usually is not hurting anyone. The danger starts the moment somebody disturbs it, when a renovation, a repair, a demolition, or a careless cut sends those tiny fibers into the air where a worker can breathe them.
Here is the part that makes this different from almost any other hazard you will study. There is no safe level of asbestos exposure, the fibers are far too small to see, and the diseases they cause (asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma) can take twenty, thirty, even forty years to show up. A worker can breathe asbestos on a job today, go home, raise a family, and learn decades later that the dust nobody warned them about is the reason they are sick. That long delay is exactly why awareness matters so much. You will never feel the harm in the moment, so you have to recognize the hazard with your head, not your senses, and respect it before it ever gets into your lungs.

- The basics of how OSHA regulates asbestos work: the permissible exposure limit and excursion limit, regulated areas, the four classes of asbestos work, and the full program required before anyone may disturb it.
