You do not have to work in a hospital to meet blood on the job. First responders, custodians, tattoo artists, security, childcare, maintenance crews who find a discarded needle, and any coworker who steps in when someone is hurt: all of them can be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, the microscopic viruses that ride in human blood. You cannot see them, smell them, or feel them. By the time you would know they were there, the exposure has already happened.
OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens standard, 1910.1030, exists because three serious viruses (hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV) can pass from one person’s blood into another’s through a needlestick, a splash to the eyes, or a cut. The good news is that exposure is highly preventable, and this course teaches exactly how: treat all blood as infectious, put barriers between it and you, handle sharps and spills the right way, and know precisely what to do in the minutes after an exposure.
