Cold Stress Awareness

Cold does not announce itself the way a fall or a flash does. It works slowly, quietly, on the people who feel like they can tough it out, and by the time it shows, the worker is often the last to know. This course teaches you to read the cold, on yourself and on the person next to you, before it takes someone down.

Picture a roadwork crew on a January night, headlights and cones, a wind cutting straight through. One worker has been out since the start of the shift, soaked through at the knees from kneeling in slush, telling everyone he is fine. He is not loud anymore. He fumbled the last connector twice and laughed it off. He missed a simple instruction and asked for it again. To everybody around him he just looks tired and a little off. What is actually happening is that his core temperature is dropping, his thinking is starting to slip, and the part of him that should be sounding the alarm is the part the cold takes first. Cold stress is dangerous precisely because the worker losing the fight is usually the worst judge of it.

That is the whole reason this training exists. Cold stress illnesses (hypothermia, frostbite, trench foot, chilblains) are serious, sometimes deadly, and they are highly preventable. They do not strike out of nowhere. They build on conditions you can see coming: wind, wet clothing, exhaustion, dehydration, a long shift with no warm break. This course gives you the eyes to recognize the early warning signs, the knowledge to do the right first aid, and the judgment to know when a cold worker has crossed from uncomfortable into a medical emergency that needs 911. Most of all, it puts the focus where it belongs: on watching out for each other, because in the cold, your crew is your early warning system.

What you will learn

  • How cold actually hurts the body, and why a worker can be in real danger long before they feel like they are.
  • The major cold stress illnesses (hypothermia, frostbite, trench foot, chilblains), their early warning signs, and the correct first aid for each.
  • The risk factors that stack the deck: wind chill, wet or sweat-soaked clothing, exhaustion, dehydration, and certain medications and health conditions.
  • How to dress in layers, use warm break areas, scheduling, warm fluids, and the buddy system to keep the whole crew ahead of the cold.
  • How to recognize a cold emergency, what to do if a coworker shows severe hypothermia, and exactly when to call 911.

Who this is for

Anyone who works in the coldOutdoor construction, winter roadwork, utilities and line work, oil and gas, snow and ice removal, agriculture, and indoor cold work like refrigerated warehouses, freezers, and cold storage. If your job gets cold, this is for you.
Supervisors and crew leadsThe people who set the schedule, call the warm breaks, pair up the buddy teams, and are often the first to notice that a worker has gone quiet, clumsy, or confused. Your eyes catch what the cold worker cannot.
Why it is bilingual: in the cold, the warning that saves a life often comes from a coworker, not from the worker in trouble. “You’re slurring,” “you’ve stopped shivering,” “your hands have gone white,” that message cannot get lost in translation. This course is built in clear English and natural Spanish so every member of the crew can spot the danger in a teammate and speak up in time.

Awareness and information training aligned with the OSHA General Duty Clause (Section 5(a)(1)) and NIOSH cold stress guidance. There is no single OSHA cold stress standard; employers must protect workers from recognized cold hazards under the General Duty Clause. This online course builds awareness and supports your employer’s required site-specific training and procedures; it is not a substitute for them, and it is not medical training. Before you buy

The practical questions, answered plainly.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. When you finish the course and pass the assessment, your certificate of completion is available to download immediately from your dashboard. It carries a verification number.

How long do I have access?

Access to this course does not expire. It is self-paced, so you can start, stop and resume whenever you like, and your progress is saved between sessions.

What if I fail the assessment?

You can retake it. Knowledge checks run through the course and the final assessment draws from a larger question bank, so a retake will not simply repeat the same questions.

Does this replace hands-on training?

This course delivers the knowledge portion. Site-specific procedures, equipment-specific practice and any required practical evaluation remain your employer's responsibility, and the course is explicit about where those lines fall.

How often does this training need repeating?

The recommended refresher cadence for this topic is annually. Retraining is also triggered by a change in process or equipment, or by an observed gap in an employee's knowledge.

Can I buy this for my whole crew?

Yes. Choose "My team" on this page to buy seats instead of a single enrolment. You become the team administrator, assign seats from your Team Portal as people join, and volume pricing applies automatically at 5 seats and again at 10.
