Stored (Hazardous) Energy Awareness

The power switch is off. The machine is quiet. And it can still kill you. This course teaches you to see the energy that stays behind after the shutdown, and why “off” is not the same as “safe.”

There is a dangerous moment on every job that does not look dangerous at all. The motor has stopped. The lights on the panel are dark. The noise is gone, and the machine looks done, finished, harmless. A worker reaches in to clear a jam, change a blade, or fix a leak, trusting the quiet. What that worker cannot see is that the machine is not empty. A spring is still wound. A cylinder is still under pressure. A capacitor is still holding a charge. A raised ram is held up only by the system that just lost power. The energy did not leave when the power went off. It just went still, waiting, and a service worker is exactly the person who tends to wake it up.

This is stored energy, sometimes called residual or hazardous energy, and it is one of the leading reasons people are hurt and killed during maintenance and servicing, even when they did everything they thought was right and shut the machine down first. Turning a machine off cuts the supply of new energy. It does almost nothing about the energy already trapped inside. This course teaches you to recognize every form that trapped energy takes, to understand how it injures people during service, and to know the methods used to bring it safely to zero as part of a lockout/tagout program. The goal is simple and it is personal: nobody puts a hand into a machine that is still holding a punch.

What you will learn

  • What stored, residual, and hazardous energy are, and why a machine that is switched off can still be fully loaded and dangerous.
  • The forms stored energy takes: electrical charge in capacitors, hydraulic and pneumatic pressure, springs under tension or compression, gravity and suspended or elevated loads, rotational and flywheel momentum, thermal heat, chemical energy, and steam and trapped water pressure.
  • How stored energy injures and kills people during servicing, even with the main power locked off.
  • The methods used to control it: release, block, bleed down, restrain, dissipate, and ground, and where each one fits within OSHA 1910.147 lockout/tagout.
  • The critical verify-zero-energy step, why blocking elevated equipment is non-negotiable, and how this awareness fits under your employer’s full energy-control program.

Who this is for

Anyone near machines being servicedMaintenance, operators, mechanics, electricians, helpers, and contractors. If you service, clean, unjam, set up, or work around powered equipment, the energy left inside it is your concern.
Supervisors and crew leadsThe people who plan the work, authorize the shutdown, and are responsible for making sure every form of energy is found and brought to zero before anyone reaches in.
An awareness course, not an authorization: this training builds the understanding every worker should have about stored energy. It is not authorized-employee certification on any specific machine, and it does not replace the hands-on, equipment-specific lockout/tagout training and procedures your employer is required to provide. It makes you see the hazard. Your employer’s program tells you exactly how to control it on the equipment you touch.
Why it is bilingual: stored energy does not care what language the worker speaks. The warning that keeps a coworker from reaching into a pressurized line or under a raised ram has to land clearly for everyone on the crew. This course is built in clear English and natural Spanish so every worker can recognize the trapped energy and the verify-zero step that protects them.

Aligned with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, The Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout). Online awareness and information training that supports your employer’s required energy-control program and equipment-specific training and is not a substitute for it. Before you buy

The practical questions, answered plainly.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. When you finish the course and pass the assessment, your certificate of completion is available to download immediately from your dashboard. It carries a verification number.

How long do I have access?

Access to this course does not expire. It is self-paced, so you can start, stop and resume whenever you like, and your progress is saved between sessions.

What if I fail the assessment?

You can retake it. Knowledge checks run through the course and the final assessment draws from a larger question bank, so a retake will not simply repeat the same questions.

Does this replace hands-on training?

This course delivers the knowledge portion. Site-specific procedures, equipment-specific practice and any required practical evaluation remain your employer's responsibility, and the course is explicit about where those lines fall.

How often does this training need repeating?

The recommended refresher cadence for this topic is annually. Retraining is also triggered by a change in process or equipment, or by an observed gap in an employee's knowledge.

Can I buy this for my whole crew?

Yes. Choose "My team" on this page to buy seats instead of a single enrolment. You become the team administrator, assign seats from your Team Portal as people join, and volume pricing applies automatically at 5 seats and again at 10.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Stored Energy Awareness course cover?

It introduces the hazards of stored or residual energy in equipment, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, and gravitational sources. You will learn why equipment can remain dangerous after being switched off and the importance of releasing or restraining stored energy before work. The content supports safe energy-control practices under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147.

Who should take stored energy awareness training?

It is intended for workers who operate or work around machinery, as well as those needing a foundation before more detailed lockout/tagout training. Supervisors reinforcing energy-hazard awareness across a team will also benefit. It suits both new and experienced workers.

Is this a short, low-cost course?

Yes. It is an entry-level, self-paced awareness course designed to be completed quickly. It is a cost-effective way to build baseline understanding of stored-energy hazards.

Is a certificate included, and is it online?

Yes. The course is fully online, self-paced, and mobile-friendly, and a downloadable Certificate of Completion is provided when you finish. You can complete it from any device.
