Description
A complete, self-paced course on the hazards of tree and vegetation work: chain saws, brush chippers, felling, overhead power lines, aerial lifts, climbing and rigging, herbicides, and roadside operations. Built for utility vegetation crews, municipal and highway maintenance, landscape and tree care companies, and any employer whose people clear brush beside a road.
What is covered
- Which standard governs your work: 1910.266 logging, 1910.269(r) line clearance, or general industry
- PPE that actually stops a chain, plus noise dose under 1910.95 and hand-arm vibration syndrome
- Chain saws: kickback, pushback and pull-in, why a tenth of a second means you cannot react, and the daily inspection under 1910.266(e)
- Reading wood under load: bucking, limbing, spring poles, and pile work
- Felling: size-up, danger trees, the two tree length rule, notch and hinge, back cut, wedges, barber chair, and hung-up trees
- Brush chippers: the infeed, the last-chance bar, and the shutdown sequence before anyone reaches in
- Overhead power lines: approach distances for qualified and unqualified workers, indirect contact, and step potential
- Aerial lifts: harness anchorage, prohibited practices, ground conditions, wind and load
- Climbing and rigging: keeping life support and rigging systems entirely separate
- Herbicides: the label as law, the Worker Protection Standard, drift, buffers, re-entry and records
- Traffic control, ROPS and seat belts, thrown objects, wildfire risk, heat illness, ticks and urushiol plants
- Emergency response: bleeding control, tourniquets, aerial rescue, and getting EMS to a remote site
How it is built
- 12 lessons, about 4 hours of self-paced content
- 16 videos, including three narrated explainers on kickback, felling, and power lines
- 12 interactive exercises, including a live drop zone and approach distance calculator
- Graded knowledge check after every lesson (4 questions, 75% to pass, unlimited retakes)
- Final assessment of 24 questions drawn at random from a 48-question bank, 80% to pass. Retakes draw a different set
- Certificate of completion with a verification number, for your training file and for contractor prequalification
Important scope note
This is awareness training. It does not qualify anyone to operate a chain saw or chipper, to fell trees, to climb, to work from an aerial lift, or to perform line-clearance tree trimming near energised conductors. Each of those requires separate hands-on training and demonstrated competence. Pesticide application requires state licensing.
