Workers compensation and EMR

Your EMR is not a safety score. It is a bill.

Your experience modification rate is a direct multiplier on your workers compensation premium, and it is calculated from claims data that is already several years old by the time it reaches you. That gap is where money quietly goes missing.

Why the number lags reality

Improvements you make today show up on a delay. A claim handled badly a few years ago is still being paid for now. Two companies with identical safety performance can carry very different rates because of how their claims were managed and how their payroll was classified.

That means the fastest financial win is usually not a new safety initiative. It is finding the errors and the mismanagement already baked into the rate.

Rating worksheet audit

The worksheet itself, checked line by line. Errors in reported losses and payroll are more common than most employers expect.

Claim file review

Open and closed claims, reserves, and whether anything is sitting open that should have been closed years ago.

Class code review

Payroll assigned to the wrong classification can inflate a premium independently of any claim.

Return to work design

A structured return to work arrangement changes how a claim develops, which is one of the few levers that acts on the rate directly.

Where safety and finance meet

Safety is usually argued for on injury numbers. Finance does not buy injury numbers, it buys avoided cost and defensible decisions. The experience modification rate is the clearest line between the two, which is why it is the right place to start a conversation with a CFO.

Offered by arrangement, and here is why

We offer this review by arrangement, which means we confirm we can assign a qualified lead to your account before we take the work. We would rather tell you that up front than accept an engagement we cannot properly staff. It is the same reason we publish what each of our services actually reaches instead of stopping at the word nationwide.

Free tool, no form

Our EMR calculator is free to use and does not ask for your email. If the number surprises you, that is usually worth a conversation.

Common questions

What is an experience modification rate?

Your experience modification rate, often called EMR or x-mod, is a multiplier applied to your workers compensation premium based on your claims history compared with others in your class. A rate above 1.0 means you pay more than the baseline for your class, and a rate below 1.0 means you pay less.

Why does my EMR not reflect how safe we are today?

Because it is calculated on claims data that is already several years old by the time it reaches you. Improvements you make now show up on a delay, and a claim handled badly a few years ago is still being paid for today. That gap is exactly where a rating worksheet review tends to find money.

What does the review actually cover?

The rating worksheet itself, open and closed claim files, class code assignment, and your return to work arrangements. Errors in any of those can inflate a rate independently of how safely the work is currently performed.

Is this available right away?

It is offered by arrangement, which means we confirm we can assign a qualified lead to your account before we take the work. We would rather tell you that up front than accept an engagement we cannot properly staff.

Sources and further reading

Links go to the primary source rather than our summary of it. The OSHA material is free to read. ISO 45001 itself is a purchased standard, so the ISO link goes to the official listing where you can confirm the current edition and its amendment and read the free preview. We describe requirements in general terms; this is not legal advice or a determination of what any regulation requires of your organization.

It is the single most informative document about what your safety record is costing you, and most employers have never had it read closely.
