Almost every machine you service is holding something that can hurt you. Electricity in the panel, pressure in a line, a spring under load, a part suspended overhead, steam, hot fluid, a flywheel that keeps turning long after the power is cut. As long as that energy is controlled by the normal operating controls, the machine does the work and the energy stays where it belongs. The danger comes the moment you cross into the machine to clear a jam, change a blade, reach past a guard, or do a repair. Now your body is where the moving parts and the stored energy are, and the only thing standing between you and that energy is whether it was truly shut off, isolated, and locked so it cannot come back on.
That is the job of the authorized employee, and that is what this course is about. You are the person who performs the servicing, who applies the locks and tags, and who carries the responsibility of making the machine safe before the work starts and keeping it safe until the work is done. Lockout/tagout is not paperwork and it is not a formality. It is a disciplined sequence that turns a live, dangerous machine into a dead, safe one, every time, in the same order, so that nobody flips a switch, opens a valve, or releases a spring while your hands are inside.
